Question:

I recently remodeled my kitchen and added a new range vent fan. When operating the range hood if the furnace is on, flue gases are backing up into my basement.
I've had the fire dept. over on one occasion. I've confirmed the negative pressure with the furnace off just by checking the draft at the flue cleanout.
Opening a window obviously helps but isn't practicle in the winter. Appreciate any suggestions to rectify. The furnace is oil burning with a blower on the front, about mid ' 80's vintage. I am also considering
a HRV hepa filter unit for my wife's allergies would this sufficiently equalize house pressure with the kitchen fan on?

Answer:

The filter would not be a great help in a situation like this unless you first get your furnace service people in there to recommed changes to you. They'll have to come over anyway because the feed-back should not be occuring. Recommedations in cases like this can only be made by some on site. Its your life we're tinkering with!
