Question:

Before I can replace the gas water heater, the gas company wants a chimney liner installed. The water heater and the furnace both use the same flue. How are the 2 exhausts attached to the liner? I know I have to have a gas fitter or a gas company install the water heater. I'm concerned that if I have to contact a separate furnace installation company they'll want to charge me a lot to connect the furnace exhaust because I don't know what's really involved.

Answer:

This is all done before the stack reaches the chimney so there should be no problem. If the liner happens to be a separate demand of the water heater on the other hand, you may indeed have to pay the extra. I'd want someone very knowledgeable in the field to advise me right at the site because you may not necessarily need a separate liner.
