Top > Heat > Central Air

Question:

I am having a problem with keeping one room of my house cool. I have central air and a two story house. On the whole the house is reasonably even in heat and cooling except for this one room. The room I am concerned about is on the second floor. It is always warmer than the rest of the house in the summer and if my son sleeps with his door closed it gets very warm. There are ceiling fans in all of the bedrooms upstairs but in his room it doesn't seem to help.

Answer:

You'll have to monkey with the dampers on the furnace ducts in the basement. There is a handle on each damper and a flap inside the duct. That flap is turned in the same direction as the flap so when it is 90-degrees to the duct, the flapper is closed. You'll try to steal heat (and cold) from some of the other rooms and direct it to this one. Before you start, try using a magic marker to designate which way the handle points before you move it. This will give you a good idea of how much you've effected air flow. If you want to get into re-directing air for different seasons, just use different coloured magic markers.
