I adore you! I moved to Ottawa from the US three years ago. I had listened to the most wonderful man on talk radio there for more than 20 years. I mourned the loss of that talk radio show when I moved-- until I found you! We bought the most gorgeous 150-year-old limestone farmhouse in Gloucester, Ontario. It was deeded by King George in 1802, 200 acres. And we are planning a two-storey replacement for the old garage that is there now. Sort of a carriage house modeled after the old barn that was part of the original property. We plan to have the downstairs as a big room, and two rooms on the second floor, home offices for my husband and me. We have propane gas heat now in the house, across the driveway from this stand-alone building. I have a fantasy of radiant heat in the new building but people think I am crazy, that it is not possible/logical/do-able. We have had people suggest raising the floor on 2x2's and running some sort of small fan to circulate the heat, we have thought of having rigid foam on the slab, then the sub-floor, then wood or industrial carpeting - we have no idea what to consider.
Answer:
When my feet are cold, believe me, all of me is cold. Radiant heat, either via a hose and liquid or in the electrical form under ceramic tiles sounds better every day. Don't let anyone talk you out of it if that's what you want because as an afterthought, it will be substantially more expensive.
