Question:

I am having my first winter in my new home(12yrs old), and I'm having heating problems. My vents are ticking as they expand and contract. I know where the ticking is coming from, but it is under a floor I can not access. Any thoughts on using some form of low expansion expanding foam injected though a drilled hole. The upstairs is cold and the downstairs is too hot.I have tried shutting registers off and balancing it, but I'm wondering if it could be insuficient insulation in the attic. We are having major condenstaion even with the house humdifier shut off. The problem is so bad that mildew is forming on the bottom of the window frames. I can mitigate all the problems somewhat by leaving the furnace fan running constantly, but that gets tiresome after a while.

Answer:

If you can find a fire retardent foam, you might try spraying it through a hole but for evening up the upstairs and downstairs temperature you'll just have to keep tinkering with the duct dampers. You need more ventilation and for that, I suggest a large diameter ceiling fan that pushes air downward 24-7 throughout the year.
