Question:

I have a wood furnace and over the last couple of years I have noticed a brown stain has appeared on the shingles around the base of the chimney, the chimney was rebuilt with cinder block and new liner installed in the summer of 1998. Is there any way I can get rid of the creosote stain on the shingles and what would you suggest to stop the stain re-appearing.

Answer:

First, the stains are caused by creosote which is a result of either too low a flame for extended periods in the stove and/or wood with too much moisture in it. Evergreen wood should never be used in a wood burning unit and even deciduous wood should be off the stump and split at least a year before it is used.
