Question:

Any helpful hints on replacing a bathroom switch for a fan. Right now the bathroom fan turns on whenever we turn on the light. The light switch is outside the bathroom. Uncle Peter said that the fan is wired to the light. We don't want to cut a whole in the wall, but wish the fan to be on a separate switch outside the bathroom next to the light switch. Do you know if we can buy a fan that has a switch on the base of the fan's frame? Anyway, any helpful hints would be great.

Answer:

The fan is covered with the plate that you see on the ceiling. The fan motor is actually plugged into the housing behind the grill you see there. You might be able to get a switchable plug that fits in there and the string would hang down through the grill. I don't know why you'd want the fan off though because its your best protection against mildew in the bathroom especially if it is rated at least 90 CFM or higher.
