Question:

About a year ago I bought a building for my wife for her Psychology practice, it was a former bank with the main level about 2200 sq.ft and the second level on one end about 1000 sq ft. We just recently renovated the top floor and my wife has her office in a large room upstairs, however the furnace room is right next to her office. The furnace is quite loud, and obviously in her line of work where a quiet area is important,it is quite annoying. While renovations were being done I had some insulation and gyproc put in between the furnace and the wall but this didn't help much. Is there any such thing as getting a quieter pump or furnace itself or getting some sort of baffler on the furnace? The furnace I believe is older but

Answer:

You might try adding bulk to the ofending walls. Sound proofing a wall or ceiling, I’ve found, is best done by creating a sandwich with lots of bulk. I apply 5/8” gypsum board (roughly taped, jointed and sanded) to the studs or joists and then 7/8” sound absorbing fibrous panel manufactured for the purpose. On top of that, I apply resilient channel (16” O.C.) and then another layer of 5/8” gypsum board. This time the gypsum board is properly taped jointed and sanded.
