Last week I re-insulated the attic. This week I've noticied a substantial crack in the cieling in the master bedroom. I guess I put too much weight someplace. It is not a hairline crack. It is up to maybe a 1/16 of an inch in some places. I can also push on the ceiling over the crack and it closes. It is about 6 feet long! Can I just patch from below or do I need to do something structural. If structural, and I'm hoping not. How do I repair?
Answer:
You'll be doing work on quite a bit more of the ceiling than just the crack. You'll probably have to probe for the straps that the drywall was attached to and then drive in new drywall screws to push the ceiling back up to where it was. Once you've done that to an area that will permit no more upward motion, you can tape and repair the crack.
