Question:

We are discarding a large foam mattress, 10" thick, which is perfectly clean. Would it make sense to slice it into strips and add it to the attic insulation over the coolest room? I would not want to compress the existing insulation, so would intend to lay it across the beams at right angles, for support. Any downsides here? (23 year old house, standard construction).

Answer:

Before recycling theat matteress I'd sure want to know what it was used for and what all is going to be living in the summer heat up there. If there happens to be an odour you don't like, its still there to stay long after you change your mind about saving a buck.
