Bought a new house this year. Living room is always cold because a closet was built off of the living room that extends ~1 foot into the garage. No insulation around this closet, just drywall and the garage is not insulated. It's like a hot air vacuum! I've reviewed your boards and have a couple of questions. (1) I'm planning to use foam board insulation. Should I insulate the inside of the closet or the outside? I'd prefer the inside, because it would be easier. (2) My plan is to just lay the insulation over the wall, but do I need to be concerned about condensation and a vapor barrier. (My thought is no, but I need the expert opinion.)
Answer:
By doing it your way, you'll lose a lot of floor space in the closet and still not have done a credible job of insulating. Do yourself a favour and apply vapour barrier to the wall on the garage side and then insulate with at least R-20 bats. You can then cover this with whatever you wish - but cover it you must.
