Top > Insulation > Cold Room

Question:

We have just extended our kitchen and have built a cold room under the new area. The walls are already insulated and now we wish to do the ceiling of the cold room (under the kitchen floor). There is a provision for outside air to enter the cold room but we don't foresee below-zero temperatures in there. When putting insulation in the joists, is a vapour barrier required? The cold room ceiling will be finished with ceiling tiles once insulated.

Answer:

I don't think insulating the ceiling of the cold room will do anything for. It will isolate the kitchen from the cold room but is there a need for that? It certainly won't make the kitchen floor warmer and no matter what you do, you won't make the cold room colder unless you permit outside air to fill it.
