Question:

I read in one of your answers that you recommend using bat when insulating the basement. I was wondering why you do not recommend rigid insulation. If the only reason is cost, does not the ease of the installation make up for some of that cost difference? A third question I have is what is the minimum recommended R value for the basement walls. I saw that you had R20, but an archetect said I only needed R10. I understand that more is better, but is it really needed.

Answer:

Bat insulation makes wiring, plumbing, heating, etc. modifications much easier and R-10 (depending on where you live) went out with black and white TV. I wonder if your architect source is a home owner who pays heating bills or a renter.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
