Question:

We purchased a home in a new development and I noticed that once the basement is excavated the builder is lining the floor of the hole with pink stryofoam insulation prior to pouring the footings. The development is located in an area where the ground has alot of clay and is located near a train track. Would you know why this is being done?

Answer:

Often local bylaws demand this sort of protection for the basment floor but it normally goes only under the floor and not the footings.
