I have a separate 2 car garage that I would like to insulate so that I may work there during the cold winter nights and hot summer days in comfort. I also plan on heating it during the winter once insulation has been put in. What key items and materials should I look into to keep it well ventilated, as dry as possible, and insulated from the cold and heat? Should I insulate everything, including the garage door, roof, and all walls? I will be using the garage mostly for autobody work and would like to work all year round.
Answer:
You'll have to introduce at least two substantial beams because you'll probably want to use chain hoists in there. This is a good thing actually because you can now establish an attic - the floor of which you can vapour barrier and then insulate. You should be have a hatch to the attic so you can replace the door on it with a screen during the summer and then close it up for winter heating. I'd insulate the door too or you might find it less expensive to purchase an already insulated door with a 'man door' built into it. Are they ever handy!
