Expert Q
Question:
I am renovating an old addition to a house, approximately 130 years old. The attic has 2 -3 inches of wood shavings. I plan to insulate it with R30 fiberglass. Is it necessary to remove the wood shavings or can the bats be placed directly on top of the shavings? I am putting vapor barrier on the existing ceiling and then covering that with finished wood.
Answer:
Rather than bats, I'd prefer to blow insulation in over the chips to avoid the possibility of creating an air gap between it and the chips. The VB on the ceiling is a great idea but I'd also apply a layer of 5/8" drywall for bulk; its a great temperature stabilizer and you reap the profits of that both in winter and summer.
