Question:

I have a brand new house with a large cathederal ceiling over the main room on the second floor. Suddenly I seem to have developed a leak at 6 feet up along the roof from the point where it meets the wall (leak coming from recessed light) and puddling on the inside of my extension jams. I have NO ice buildup on the roof. It was suggested that snow may be blowing into my ridge vent and running all the way down the inside off the ceiling. Does this seem likely and if so, what are some alternate solutions?

Answer:

It seems to have much more to do with air having access from the soffit to the cavity above the insulation but then not having access to the ridge vent at the top. This means it has to condense and flow back down. Your light fixture is just placed so that the condensation drips through it. You may have to dismantle part of the ceiling to confirm this.
