Question:

I have a 24-ft in-ground swimming pool, 18 yr. old, which I would like to fill in. The kids have all left, they have their own pool, and my wife and I just hate the damn thing. We either pay to have the thing repaired or get rid of it. I cannot find anyone who would do it. It has a 3-ft reinforced cement walkway around backyard, is very difficult to get at and fences would have to be taken down etc. I can't even get anyone to come & give me an estimate; pool installer won't touch it with a 10-ft pole. Surely, many people no longer want their pool and the upkeep for something that is virtually unused. Where does one turn to?

Answer:

You seem to know what you want to do and you also seem to know how to go about getting it done. Why not find someone who can handle a jackhammer, hire him by the hour and wait for the high school kids to come and bring the debris out to the curb by wheelbarrow. If there's too much to it, you can rent a dump box and have the thing waiting there to be loaded and they'll haul it away. I can't see all this costing half as much as what you estimate and at the same time, you'll know its done right. Those same kids will wheel barrow the topsoil into the back yard for you when everything else is cleared away and then you can start gardening or whatever. The jackhammer I would rent, the wheelbarrow, shovels and rakes I would buy.
