Last year I replaced my oil furnace with a high efficiency gas furnace. Now I am selling my house and the home inspector informed me that the furnace was not vented properly. I understand the issues after reading about it. My question is should my reputable Installer have let me know at the time the dangers of not lining my chimney properly and given me the option at that time to make an informed decision? My home inspector tells me over time the chiminey will really be affected by this, it's already flaking. Do I have any recourse to insist that the installer do the right thing, reline the flue and give me some recompense for neglecting the obvious? I know I should pay for this but what if I hadn't decided to sell and let this go on and on... A lot more damage and alot more headache.
Answer:
I think the first thing I'd want to know is the qualifications of the building inspector. Mind you, I'd also want to know why the installer didn't do the right thing. If instructions in the ownership manual were compromised during installation, I'd certainly want my lawyer to be communicating with people who compromised them.
