Question:

Can you tell me of a product that will harden and seal the surface a concrete floor. The floor when swept or vacuumed is turning to dust and or scales off. I have been told it does not have enough cement in the mixture. This floor was laid in 1947. I have been told that it needs to be replaced, big job, big cost.

Answer:

Try this. Seal with a 50/50 mixture of chemically boiled linseed oil and varsol to protect it from further spalling as a result of salt and grime contamination. The area will have to be cleaned well first though and then permitted to dry. A couple of warnings to you - if you use raw linseed oil, it will take a very long time to cure and your floor cannot be used until it does, just in case the floor has already been sealed in this way before, test a small portion of it before trying to do the whole thing. Removing the solution is not pleasant. This compound is prone to spontaneous combustion so all safety measures should be observed when using it - clothes soaked in it along with residue and working materials containing it should be taken to a chemical waste depot.
