Question:

We had a tree fall down on the cornor of our front step which is a combination of cement blocks, and masonery
work. Now the top of this step has a great crack
across the whole thing, plus the cornor all broke. In other words, a complete mess. My husband tried to fix the cornor of this step but this has fallen away again. Now under this step is my fruit cellar with a door in the basement. How can this nightmare be fixed. What we would like to do is jackhammer this step OUT and replace it with a wood deck of some sort. What are we to do? The basement "cellar door" it should be reconstruted and filled with cement blocks? Perhaps we should have someone do this for us. Maybe we can use the cement to fill in the fruit cellar.

Answer:

The corner of the step can be repaired with a wooden form laid in to hold the new concrete which would be pinned to the old. It will have to be mixed wiht a special adhesive so the new will adhere. If you take out the concrete step and replace it with wood, it will probably leak into the cold room. The whole project should be a job for a pro unless you have experience in the masonry field.
