Question:

I have another roof question on leakage. i live in a semi-detached bungalo home in ottawa (ON). I've noticed a leak in my roof where the chimney is. this pitch of the roof is not great and the chimney is at the very top of the roof, so this is where the water is coming in. the flashing on the roof around the chimney is old and i've caulked around all areas of the flashing. water still seems to be getting in somehow. I don't see any cracks in the chimney itself, it appears to be in good shape. i just can't seem to figure out how the water is getting in there.

Answer:

Before applying new caulking, all the old has to be removed right down to vergin metal to make sure the new has a good surface to adhere to. Short of that, no matter what it says on the container, the new will probably leak.
