I am planning to build a workshop and am getting conflicting advice with respect to foundation requirements. Is it advisable in the Eastern Ontario area to build a 25X30' building on a slab foundation (grade level) or should a perimeter foundation wall be built on footings below frost line? If a slab is advisable should the slab be thicker at the edges and the concrete reinforced?
Answer:
Your planned shop is exactly the same size as mine in Ottawa, Ontario and mine has ten-foot ceilings with sort of a half attic above. It's on a slab with the perimeter 18 inches deep, the floor 4 or 5 inches. I have no complaints and the building is roughly twenty years old.
