Question:

I just love your "renovations Canada' show; although my husband may not. I'm sure if he hears again 'But Ren says it has to be done this way! he'll scream. We (I) want to turn the attached garage into a tv room for our daughter. How do we prepare the floor of the garage? The previous owners had built this garage with a foundation below so that it would be level with the main entrance of the house. The room underneath is 12X18'long, 7' h. They put 8" thick concrete slabs across from one side of the foundation to the other. The room below is not heated (but will be insulated and ventilated). How much cold will come through this floor?

Answer:

In the normal garage, the ceiling is higher than eight feet so my suggestion is always to install a sub-flooring that touches the garage floor only in spots so that when I pump warm air into the cavity under the floor, it gets a chance to circulate as completely as possible. The perimeter has to be insulated and from there, its just a normal floor. If you have a room underneath, you'll be better off to heat that room so the floor of the TV room is warm. Give serious though to hydroponics from underneath the 8" slab.
