Question:

I have a crack in the foundation of my 9 year old home. It begins about 5" above ground and goes all the way down to the basement floor and carries across the floor for about 4 feet. During our recent heavy rains, it leaked a small pool of water. Can I fix it myself? Do I need to dig down from the outside? What would have caused this?

Answer:

The way you describe it is not encouraging for a DIY project. Because it comes down the wall and then continues across the floor, it may have had a negative impact on the footings and that immediately makes it a job for the best pro in your area.
