Question:

Could you please outline the procedure for constructing a driveway using Paving Stones.

Answer:

Excavate to a depth of not less than 20 inches and fill the cavity with 5/8" gravel to the 17-inch level. This gravel has to be constantly soaked and mechanically compacted so when you're done, it's level. Now add the stone dust - again, compacting constantly and put it in to a level that is just one inch below grade. Before laying in the paving stones, the stone dust has to be compacted sufficiently so you cannot push a 4" spike into it. That done, you can now lay in the paving stones. Lay them in tight and sprinkle and sweep silica sand into the whatever gaps you can. Thje driveway in now an inch proud of grade but that will settle to be even within a year. Doing a walkway, you follow the same procedure but excavate only to a depth of 12 inches.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
