Question:

My house built in 1990 has loose insulation about three inches, but that's a guess. I believe code then was abour R32. I plan to install a new roof next summer and have a ridge vent put in. The attic is much too warm in summer, as I do not like to crank up the air conditioner and contribute to coal generating pollution. I currently have two "whirlybirds" in place, but as I heard you say the bearings can squeak after the years. With this information, typically how much R factor is required and in plain english for someone like myself, that translates into a couple more inches of insulation?

Answer:

There is nothing wrong with at least R-40. In my attic I have about R-60 with all kinds of measures not to impede soffit venting. I also have a gable-to-gable baffled ridge vent and I more than doubled the ceiling drywall thickness. Yes, it keeps the fuel bills down.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
