Question:

I am planning to add 6 inch crown molding to the ceilings of several rooms on the first floor of our home. My question relates to how should the molding be fastened to the ceiling? Several people have suggested that a piece of ½” x 1” strapping should be fastened to the ceiling and the molding is then nailed to the strapping. While others have suggested that the molding can be directly fastened to the second floor 2x8 floor joists using a longer brad nail?

Answer:

I've used both systems and they work very well but I make no allowance for the airnailer nails. I use 2", 18guage on all of it and I make very sure they're all driven in at an angle.
