Question:

I just had a new cedar fence installed and when I put pressure on the posts the panels sway and rattle. One side is 76 feet in length (good neighbour style) and is the worst--it does a complete wave from beginning to end then rattles. The contractor said this is perfectly normal but i've never heard of this before or seen it. My old rotten fence didn't even do that. Also the panel beside the house and the gate are not plum and there is a 1.5 inch gap between the gate and panel--will this create problems over time?

Answer:

Your last statement is already a problem. The waving and rattle have to do with the posts. Are they substantial enough to provide rigidity? Are they plumb? Are they properly lined up? Are they deep enough in the ground - consider frost, for example? Is the fill aorund them well enough compacted?

Telephone and E mail information is always free so please don’t hesitate to take advantage of it.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
