The small entrance area of my condo is tile whereas the rest of the unit is carpet. I removed the baseboards and replaced the carpet with hardwood. Now I have a problem putting the original baseboards back on. The hardwood is approximately a quarter of an inch higher than the tile area. I have a custom-made piece of hardwood transition that dips towards the tile. As a result, the baseboard that goes on top of the tile now has one end lower sitting on the tile, while the other end sits on the hardwood and has a gap under it. If I cut the bottom of the baseboard to match the profile of the hardwood-tile transition, the baseboard would sit properly but then the top would be lower than the adjacent baseboard that sit entirely on the hardwood floor. What should I do? Could I glue to the baseboard a layer of foam that matches the profile of the floor transition and then caulk over it?
Answer:
Rather than foam, I think I'd mill a piece of wood a quarter of an inch high and slip it it under the baseboard above the tiles. There is no way you'll cover that drop so it doesn't show but it will show far less if that quarter-inch piece is there. You might even want topaint that strip the same colour as the tile grout.
