Question:

I'm considering purchasing a home which was built in 2007 (actually a semi-detached) with a pressure treated wood foundation. I've searched the internet briefly for info but it's hard to find (other than some comments)much specific information. Firstly what's your opinion on this type of fooundation ? Is it reliable for long term (how much history is there on it's use)and is there any sources or web sites you might suggest for reference ?

Answer:

Wood foundations go back a hundred years and more particularly in Western Canada. I think they're at least as good as anything else in the housing industry if the foundations are back filled with sand and only sand. In about 40 years of dealing publicly (radio, TV, print media, lectures, etc.) I've not heard of any problems with them - provived they're sand back filled.

In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
