I have a brass table top which was stored in an unheated garage over the winter. Unfortunately, something got to it, only at one end and not on the reverse side. It is spotted with what looks like corrosion but isn't. The brass was treated about 15 years ago (so I wouldn't have to polish it); could it be the finish eroding?

The treatment could be failing with age but that can be taken off and you're back to solid material. If it's brass the finish won't erode due to moisture but it will corrode. There are several products on the market to look after that sort of thing. Some of these will work so well it'll just knock your socks off.
