Question:

We have a electric baseboard heater in our basement and everytime we try to turn it on, it gives off an irritating odour. Our house has a central heating but we are interested in using our baseboard heater because we find it not too warm enough in the basement. Do we have to replace it? What causes this foul odour?I basically don't know how old it is since we only had the house for more than a year only.

Answer:

Turning the power to the heater off and dismantling it for a good dusting and air cleaning will do a lot for you. What you're smelling is probably built-up mold and dust as it warms up.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
