Question:

We want to upgrade the ceiling look at our cottage. The ceiling is 1/4" plywood, painted. Structurally, the ceiling is in excellent shape with some minor cracks at the joints in the 4' x 8' sheets of plywood. The objective is to refinish the existing ceiling and to give it a consistant finish. Some of the options we have been considering are: Fill minor cracks with poly-filler etc. Prime & spray stucco on. Question, will stucco adhere? In additon, the cottage is not heated in the winter. Use a textured ceiling paint. filler and repaint.

Answer:

You appear to like the plywood so why not enhance it with false beams made into "U" shapes with 1X2s or 1X3s. This would cover up the gaps and a bit of an adventurous paint job can make them stand out. Heatint it or not will make little, if any difference. Your suggestion of filling the gaps with mud, you'll find, will disintigragte in rather short order. That stuff doesn't take kindly to moisture and the plywood does so there is constant movement there. Texture on plywood will only make it look like texture on plywood.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
