My husband and I are renovating a house built in circa 1900. We discovered tin tiles on the ceiling and on the walls. As well, there is some tin molding. It is evident that there are many layers of paint on the tiles (ceiling included). The paint that is currently on there is probably led paint. Some of the tiles are pealing, some are bent, almost all have numerous nail holes in them and the tin molding that remains is rusted and in very bad condition. (1) I absolutely want to keep the tiles and restore them. How do I do this (new paint, nail holes, bent tin)? (2) Because of the led paint, how do I get rid of the tin molding?
Answer:
The tiles will have to be carefully removed and the nail holes will hammer back and all but seal themselves. A new coat of paint will cover them up. Getting rid of the old paint on them will also be easier if they're taken off. The old trim will come off in the same way and you might decide to keep it.
