Question:

I am looking at purchasing a new home and was wondering when looking at homes is there any way of telling whether or not the basement is damp. I know about looking for white marks on the concrete indicating water spots. However, the last home we purchased looked completely dry and there never was any indication of water yet after moving in there always was a damp feeling in the basement. Any tricks to check this out when inspecting a house for purchase.

Answer:

If it is only a damp feeling, it can normally be attributed to a lack of ventilation and that is not hard to overcome. Other than that, your own system is about as easy as it gets but in most cases, experienced inspectors still get more results just because of their past experiences.
