Question:

i am looking at purchasing a property with an unfinished basement and converting it completely to an in-law suite with a 3 piece bath, kitchen, bedroom and living area.
I would do the priming/paint/trim/flooring but there would be framing, drywall, electrical, plumbing, and insulation to do.
What sorts of preparation would a contractor expect from a prospective customer and what questions and expectations a prospective customer should ask a potential contractor in the selection process?

Answer:

The only way these questions will be answered credibly is by talking with at least three contractors and deciding who is to do what and at what stages of the actual work. Based on those discussions a contract is written up, reviewed by your legal council and signed by both contractor and home owner.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot comment on specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Telephone and E mail information is always free so please don’t hesitate to take advantage of it.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
