Question:

I got rid of our eavestroph because of ice damming. I replaced the fascia and then covered it with a drip edge and aluminum siding. The water runs off the roof. Some of the water goes straight down while some follows the aluminum siding (Kind of L-shaped towards the house at the bottom) and shoots water towards the house. Do you have any ideas on how to get the water running straight down and not shoot towards the house? I was thinking of putting clear packing tape along the front bottom edge of the fascia (and hanging lower off the fascia)so the water would run down the fascia, down the tape and straight down after that.

Answer:

The idea sounds great but I'd rather you attached a narrowed strip of drip edge between the fascia lip and soffit. It would hang down about an inch and a half and would be an aesthetic improvement. If you make (or have made) this narrowed drip ledge so it hangs down as little as a quarter or an inch and make it less visible. Small aluminum screws every three feet or so would hold either in place.

In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
