My cedar dek at the rear of my home is approx 18 years old. It's dimensions are 12 X 16ft. The foundations consists of 2 x 8's sitting on cement posts that are 3' above grade and four feet below grade. The dek is not attached to the house. Over the past couple years, the dek has started to shift mainly on one side. So far the shift has been about 3 inches. The end of the dek which is shifting is still sitting on the middle of the cement post but the post is now leaning. Is there anything simple to be done or is it just a question of regular monitoring until the dek falls over?
Answer:
I'd install a deck block and then a new support post. You'll have to lift the deck to level anyway and if the post is presently leaning, leave it alone - it's not going anywhere and your deck is back to level.
In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
