Question:

How can I bring back the luster of the antique iron paint on my garden bench? Can I put on a clear varnish? Will it peel? I am trying to avoid having to strip the whole thing later when I will need to repaint the iron.

Answer:

If scrubbing it with a sponge and varsol doesn't do the trick, I'm afraid you may have to strip and re-paint for a lasting job.
