We recently took out a cedar hedge to put up a wooden fence at the back of our property. We always had a problem with water pooling in our yard because we are lower in elevation than the houses around us and our soil is clay-based. With the melting snow and rain we now have a large pool in the middle of our yard. How can we remedy this problem. Would planting a few small cedar trees help this?
Answer:
If the grades around you are higher than yours, you should be able to dig in a drainage tile and lead it all out to the street and that would look after it once and for all. My system is to dig the trench, give it a base of 6" of 5/8" gravel, lay in the drainage tile, lay in another 6" of gravel and let it do its work. This can be done in a trench no deeper than about 16".
