Every year about this time, my wife gets after me to put up the outdoor Christmas lights (icicle type). I always run out of excuses and end up doing it. This year, as I started the process, it dawned on me that someone could get electrocuted the way I was doing it. I hang the string of lights from the evetroughing with little plastic clips, which looks safe enough. But in that location, it is exposed to rain, ice and snow. An ice storm could coat everything with ice. Water could get into the plug and socket connections between the light strings. The whole evetroughing could become an electrical conductor, including the downpipe. What do you recommend? Are there do-it-yourself books on the market that deal with this task?

Answer:
Nice try! Mine have been up just the way you describe for nine years now and other than losing the colouring off some of the bulbs, they work very well. I'm try to convince my wife that when they all become clear glass, we'll be back in vogue. Your system (and mine) appear to be be as good as it gets for now.
