The addition which was put on our 100 year old house about 10-15 years ago has white stippled ceilings which are relatively low. I'd like to remove that stippled ceiling ideally or paint it. Is there a way to remove it, other than taking the ceiling down & putting up new drywall or, if that's the only solution, can I paint over that stippled stuff? I've been told any paint I use will effectively "melt" the stippling product and make a terrible mess of the ceiling.
Answer:
Much depends on how the texture was mixed before it was installed. Often what the trades do is just mix the powder with water and then of course, yes, it will dust off as you try to paint it. A properly done job though, will have a litre of paint mixed with each batch so it holds quite well. This latter system you can paint. If it was done without the paint as part of the mixture, as soon as you apply a roller to it, it starts of rain down.
