Top > Plaster & Drywall > Noise

Question:

I have just purchased an 80 year old home with plaster and lath interior walls. The walls are cracked, damaged and even have holes in some spots. My father is going to do the repair work but would like to know where in Toronto to go for the proper supplies and a little guidance supplies.

Answer:

You don't really want to monkey too much with plaster and lath as the plaster contains a lot of asbestos - a carcenogen. My normal approach to this kind of situation is to blow insulation into the walls (from the inside) if there isn't any already in there, apply 6mm poly to the permimeter walls and uppermost ceilings and then cover the whole thing with half-inch drywall. Plaster is a good termperature retaining medium so when you heat it in winter, it stays warmer longer and when cooling in summer, you reap the opposite benefit so why not leave it there. Its also about the best sound insulator you'll find for the price and the list of positives just goes on.
