Question:

I would like to obtain more information about building a plaster ceiling. This is for someone that is not an expert. I always had mine done by experts, but my son is determined to build his own. I thought that I may as well direct him to the right sources.
I remember women talking of having to hold the board up with a broom in order to hold it up while their husbands stapled the boards. Nowadays one would expect that more tools ar eavailable. I wonder if one can use clamps and if so, which ones? A friend of mine builds his own platforms and so he is able to do his work single handled. In fact, he built his home. But he doe snto like to give advise as he says that he feels responsible if soemthing goes wrong.

Answer:

My system is a bit different and I do it all myself with little extra effort. I use long drywall screws to horizontally attach a 5' length of 2X4 to the wall studs 3/4" down from the ceiling strapping. I now attach an ordinary hinge to the middle of this and add a 2X4, 9 feet long to make a "T". A sheet of drywall set on the T so that the 2X4 on the wall keeps it from flopping to either side, will permit me to lift the free end of the 9' 2X4 and put a supporting post under it. I can now stand on a step ladder and move the sheet in any direction except up and down. When it's in place, I start with the screws.
