Drywall and poly vapor barrier were removed from a bathroom wall in renovating an older house and I am uncertain how to handle a vapor barrier issue. The wall has the following layers on the studs: drywall, enamel-painted compressed wood panelling, several layers of paper, one inch wood sheathing. There is also a six inch diameter hole penetrating all of the layers. Do I ignore the vapor barrier properties of the painted panelling, plug the hole and put up a poly barrier. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the help you have provided in the past.
Answer:
I wouldn't want anything but (from exterior sheathing): studs with insulation in the cavieties between them, vapour barrier, drywall and then paint. The rest I would remove. Now you are ready to apply tiles or whatever wall covering you might want.
