Question:

I had a tear-off, new roof with a ridge vent installed (gable to gable). My roofing salesmen said that I should seal the gable vents. He said the ventilation from the gable vents contradicts the airflow from the soffits to the ridge vent. Does this make sense?

Answer:

Yes it does but only if you have a large roof area. I actually increased (substantially) the gable end vents at my house (1200 sq. ft.) when I put on a ridge vent (gable to gable) seven years ago. I have never had ice in any amount because the soffits have good ventilation and there is about R50 on the attic floor.
