Question:

I have a new 12 X 20 shed that I use for a workshop, and it is not insulated. I have read about foil insulation and wonder if it is the way to go. I would like to keep the area between the joists and the rafter open if possible. If so, could I place it between the rafters (24 inches wide) and between the wall studs. Also what do I do abount the soffit vents that run both sides of the 20 ft length.

Answer:

Your best bet is to create an attic. It is nearly impossible to over ventilate the average attic. It is as important for air to have access to the cavity from under the eaves as it is for air to have an opportunity to exhaust as high up on the roof as possible. Proper soffit venting in combination with “U” channels and gable-to-gable baffled ridge venting appears to be the most cost effective, passive way of accomplishing this. This means, of course, that you'll be installing some form of insulation up there as well as between the studs. Don't forget that vapour barrier goes on the heated side of insulation.
