Question:

I'm looking to add a sink to the basement. I'm trying to locate an appropriate drain. The most convienient one is a vertical pipe near the furnace which the AC condensation line from the furnace drains into. (It has another line into it which comes straight from the fresh cold water line. I ass-u-me that there is a vapour trap under ground and this second line is to fill it.) Is there a way I can determine if I can use this drain, and if so do I need to provide additional venting if I connect to this point.

Answer:

First things first. Call you local building authority (city hall) and get the low down on whether this is legal and acceptable. I do not believe it is. If it is, you can easily include a line vent for the sink you problems are over.
