We never had smelly hot water until after we had a water softener installed last spring. It didn't happen right immediately. We have had the anode in the hotwater tank replaced...and then the whole tank. Nobody can seem to solve this problem. Every month or so we drain the hotwater tank rinse with cold water and refill. Ta Da. Great, no smell water for two weeks! It is driving us nuts. If we don't drain the hot water tank it gets more and more stinky. The cold doesn't smell at all!
Answer:
Talk to someone who deals with water treatment equipment and chemicals. The smell has to originate somewhere and they're the ones who can tell you how to treat it.
